Some people discover their life’s work. Garth Watrous was born into his.
His father Gary started American Hat Makers in 1972 out of a 1963 Chevy station wagon with $20 in leather and a stubborn refusal to quit. He sewed belts and wallets at craft fairs, found his way to hats, and spent the next several decades building something from nothing in Watsonville, California. Garth grew up watching all of it: the early mornings, the hard years, the slow accumulation of something real.
By 15, Garth was already selling at shows. He couldn’t drive yet so he hired his older brother to take him. The arrangement didn’t last long. A year later he had his license and a van loaded with 400 hats and was driving cross-country alone doing festivals. That was 1990. No GPS, no cell phone, no one to call if things went sideways. What it gave him was a relationship with pressure that most people never develop: the understanding that when the thing has to get done, it gets done.
He graduated from San Diego State University with a business degree and joined American Hat Makers as a full partner in 2005. By 2018 he had taken complete operational control of the company. As Chairman, Garth has doubled the business twice. The company has grown from a craft-fair operation to an internationally recognized hat brand with over a million hats sold and 16,000+ five-star reviews. AHM carries more than 400 styles sourced from manufacturing partners around the world, with headquarters in Emory, Texas.
Garth served as President of The Headwear Association, one of the oldest headwear trade organizations in the country, elected in 2017 and awarded the Lieberman Award for his contributions to the industry. He shows up to these things because he believes in them, not because they look good on a resume.
He is building Bridger with Hannah, a personal cap line designed by Dayna Lee Cornelius, the designer behind Melin. It carries everything he has learned over 30 years into a product built entirely on his own name. It is the next chapter.
None of it works without the people around him. His wife Hannah serves as Director of Global Marketing and Branding and has been his partner in every sense of the word. His son Hudson is growing up inside the same world Garth did, and whether or not he takes the reins one day is his call to make. His father Gary is still involved in design. Three generations of the same family, still in the same building, still arguing about hats. Garth considers this among the great privileges of his life.
His faith is not something he performs. It is the organizing principle underneath everything else. Recovery gave him the tools to live with honesty, to own his mistakes without drama, to extend grace to the people around him while holding himself to a high standard. He will tell you he does not have it figured out. He will also show up at 4 in the morning and get after it anyway.
Golf is where the rest of it goes. Garth has played his entire life and takes the game seriously. It is not a hobby. It is a discipline. The patience the game demands, the way it humbles you on the days you think you have it and rewards you when you stop trying to force it, mirrors exactly how he approaches business and leadership. You keep your head down. You stay in your process. You do not force it. The results take care of themselves.
Mentorship and giving back are not obligations for Garth. They are a natural extension of how he operates. He is the kind of person who genuinely wants to see the people around him win. If you are building something and you need someone in your corner who has been through it, Garth is that person. He will make time. He will tell you the truth. And he will help you get where you are trying to go.
Garth Watrous has spent his life building on a foundation his father laid. He intends to keep going.
